my grandma and grandpa used to sell socks and neckties on the street in front of their house. a humble street vendor that brought in money for a family of five children — the youngest, being my mom.
yesterday, i saw my grandma for the first time in sixteen years. essie and i took a train, a bus and a taxi to go visit her and we facetimed cj while we were there. she's really old but her mind is still working. her wish is to see all three of us together. she requested we take a photo of the four of us together. it made me sad and happy at the same time to see that she was satisfied with two of us in person and one through the phone.
we brought her a 3-pack of fuzzy socks and all my grandma wanted to do was share them with others. she scolded us for spending our hard earned money on socks. it made me think of the value of something like a pair of socks and what that meant to her all those years ago and what it means to us now.
camera notes from today.
